BEIJING, In a groundbreaking announcement, Weichai Power, a leading Chinese company, has introduced the world’s highest thermal efficiency diesel engine. Revealed at the World Internal Combustion Engine Conference in Tianjin, this innovative engine boasts an unprecedented thermal efficiency of 53.09%, setting a new global standard for the industry.
Details of the Achievement
At the prestigious release ceremony, He Nuobe, Vice President of TV South Germany Group North Asia, and An Tiecheng, Chairman of China Automotive Technology Research Center Co., Ltd., presented test reports and certificates verifying this milestone. This achievement marks a significant leap for the Chinese internal combustion engine industry, symbolizing the country’s advanced capabilities.
The Journey to 53.09% Efficiency
Improving diesel engine thermal efficiency has long been a dream for scientists worldwide. Since the inception of diesel engines 127 years ago, enhancing this efficiency has represented a significant challenge. Weichai Power began its dedicated research and development efforts in 2015, assembling a formidable team of young PhDs and thousands of engineers. Their mission: to push the boundaries of diesel engine performance.
In 2020, Weichai Power achieved a thermal efficiency of 50.23%, which was further improved to 51.09% in 2022. The same year saw another increase to 52.28%, and now, the company has broken its own record once again with a thermal efficiency of 53.09%.
Patents and Innovations
This groundbreaking engine is supported by 176 invention patents and 68 utility model patents. Over the past decade, Weichai Power’s team has demonstrated relentless innovation and commitment, leading to four major leaps in diesel engine thermal efficiency within just four years. This achievement sets a new benchmark for the global industry, promoting green and low-carbon development.
Economic and Environmental Impact
According to current estimates, the 53% thermal efficiency engine offers an economic improvement of about 14% compared to engines with 45-46% efficiency. This translates to annual fuel savings of around 31 million tons and a reduction in carbon emissions by about 97 million tons. For heavy-duty tractors running 250,000 kilometers per year, this efficiency could save approximately 12,000 liters of diesel annually, amounting to savings of about 98,000 yuan per year.
Future Applications
This remarkable technological advancement is expected to have widespread applications beyond transportation, including engineering machinery, agricultural equipment, ships, and power generation equipment. Chairman of Weichai Power, Tan Xuguang, highlighted the company’s collaborative efforts with top universities and research institutes worldwide. He emphasized that this record-breaking achievement belongs not just to Weichai but to the entire global industry.
