P0087 Code on Duramax — Low Fuel Rail Pressure, Fixed
P0087 means fuel rail pressure is too low. Change the fuel filter first, it is a 40 dollar part and the most common cause. If the code returns, check the lift pump, fuel lines, and on 2011 to 2016 models the CP4 pump.
- P0087 means the engine is not getting the fuel pressure it asked for
- Clogged fuel filter is the number one cause, change it first
- In winter, suspect fuel gelling before anything else
- Check lift pump operation and fuel lines before suspecting the high pressure pump
- Metal in the filter housing on CP4 trucks means stop driving immediately
P0087. Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low. Your Duramax throws this code, maybe goes into limp mode, and now you are wondering what is wrong. I diagnose this code a few times a month. Here is the order I check things, from most common to least.
What P0087 actually means
Your engine computer commands a certain fuel rail pressure. The sensor reports back what the pressure really is. When actual pressure stays below commanded pressure, you get P0087. The engine is not getting the fuel it is asking for. That is the whole story. The question is where the fuel is being lost.
Start here: the easy stuff
Fuel filter. I know. Everyone says this. But a restricted fuel filter is the number one cause of P0087 I see, especially in winter. If your filter has more than 20,000 km on it, or you cannot remember when it was changed, change it first. It is a $40 part and fifteen minutes.
Fuel quality and gelling. In Canadian winter, diesel gels. If the code appeared on a cold morning, suspect gelling before anything else. Get the truck somewhere warm, add anti gel treatment, and see if it clears.
Tank level. Running below a quarter tank regularly overheats the in tank pump on some models and can pull air. Keep it above a quarter.
Next: the fuel system
If the filter did not fix it, work upstream to downstream:
- Lift pump. Listen for it when you turn the key on. No hum means no pump. Test fuel delivery volume, not just pressure.
- Fuel lines. Look for kinked, collapsed, or chafed lines, especially the soft lines near the tank. I have found more than one P0087 caused by a line that looked fine until you bent it.
- CP4 pump. The 2011 to 2016 LML Duramax runs a CP4. When it fails internally, pressure drops and metal goes everywhere. If you find metal in the fuel filter housing, stop driving and budget for a full system. This is the expensive one.
- Pressure relief valve. A weak or stuck open relief valve bleeds rail pressure. Relatively cheap fix.
- Injectors. A leaking injector returns too much fuel to the tank instead of building rail pressure. A return flow test confirms it.
When to stop and get help
If you have done the filter, verified fuel delivery, and the code persists, you need proper diagnostic equipment to read commanded versus actual rail pressure under load. That is a shop visit. Tell them what you already checked. A good mechanic will appreciate it and it saves you diagnostic time.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with a P0087 code?
Short distances to get home or to a shop, gently. The truck may go into limp mode to protect itself. Do not tow or drive hard with this code active.
How much does it cost to fix P0087?
A fuel filter is about 40 dollars. A lift pump is a few hundred. A full CP4 failure with system contamination can exceed 10000 dollars, which is why you diagnose cheap causes first.
Why does P0087 appear in winter?
Diesel gelling. Wax in the fuel crystallizes in extreme cold and clogs the filter. Use winterized fuel and anti gel treatment before the cold hits.
