Diesel glossary
Every term your mechanic uses, explained like a human.
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)
The filter in your exhaust that traps soot and burns it off through regeneration.
CP4 Injection Pump
The Bosch high pressure fuel pump used on many 2011 to 2022 diesels, known for catastrophic failure.
DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)
The urea based fluid your truck injects into the exhaust to cut nitrogen oxide emissions.
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
The system that routes exhaust gas back into the engine to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
Glow Plug
The heating element that warms each cylinder for cold starts on diesel engines.
Grid Heater
The intake air heater used on Cummins engines instead of glow plugs.
Intercooler
The radiator like component that cools compressed air from the turbo before it enters the engine.
DPF Regeneration
The process where your truck burns soot out of the DPF at high exhaust temperatures.
SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)
The exhaust aftertreatment that uses DEF to neutralize nitrogen oxides.
Turbocharger (VGT)
The exhaust driven compressor that forces air into your diesel engine for more power.
